Background
Puntland Youth and Social Development Association (PSA) is local non-governmental, non- profit organization established in 2002 by a group of enthusiastic young educated members of society and it is based in Puntland state – Somalia

In 2018, Puntland Youth and Social Development Association (PSA) in partnership with UNHCR is planning to implement GBV Prevention and Response Project In Puntland state, the timeframe for the project would be 12 months.

Within the frame work of the PSA protection component, the organization seeks to fill the position of Psychosocial Counselor.

Key Responsibilities: 

The Psychosocial Counselor will be responsible but not limited to the following:

  • Provide comprehensive psychosocial counseling and PFA (Psychological Frist Aid) to address the mental health needs of GBV survivors.
  • Provide assessment,  individual and group counseling
  • Sensitize, problem solve, dialogue and mediate with the wider population about issues of SGBV, war, torture and trauma.
  • Work closely with the Case workers staff and other program team
  • Ensure all work with clients is confidential and that ethical practices are observed
  • Assist in the designing, planning, implementing and facilitating trainings for numerous target groups
  • Develop new and strengthen existing referral systems with other organizations
  • Liaise with other stakeholders
  • Engage in self-care through  supervision, debriefings, and other shared sessions
  • Assist with any other related activities as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

 Skills required

  • Diploma/ Degree in Psychology, Counseling or related field.
  • At least 2-3 years in field experience within a Humanitarian NGO/Agency in the same or similar position.
  • Experience with gender-based violence highly desirable.
  • Extensive experience providing psychotherapy to individuals and groups.
  • Understanding of and experience implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions, including individual, group and community-based approaches for people who have suffered GBV torture and trauma.
  • Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary/multi-disciplinary team desirable.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and needs.
  • Skilled at working as a member of a team.
  • Working knowledge of Somali and English
  • Knowledge of local dialect is desirable.
  • Experience in working as a counselor or ability to be an GBV counselor.
  • Experience working in local and regional contexts and knowledge of local area and community structures desirable.
  • Able to work in a stressful environment IDP camp environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills
  • Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management (including the ability to meet deadlines) Interest in or commitment to human rights
