The worst locust invasion in Puntland in the last 30 years

Food security in Bari & sanaag regions in Puntland is under threat following an invasion of desert locusts, which have destroyed several hectares of farmland across the region.

The locusts have destroyed both farmland and grassland across the two regions of Sanaag and Bari especially Ufayn sare Dhud, Dolcadayle, Samasugul, Tasjiic, Kob-dhexaad, Cawsane, Ceel-lahelay, Raq, Xudeera, Badhan, and Hadaaftimo.

Locusts have reportedly destroyed 100,000 hectares of crops in Bari & Sanaag regions

According to our assessment, the locust outbreak in the regions is getting worst and intervention to control the outbreak is urgently needed.

Our focal points from the two areas have reported that the locust invasion has destroyed several farms including trees and the grass causing a lot of losses and damages to livelihoods and food security of the local communities.

The locals have expressed concern over the spread of the locusts, saying nowhere was safe and they call upon all respective agencies and organizations to urgently intervene and see how to bring the situation under control.

As PSA we suggest that a team comprising government and non-governmental officials should undertake a mission to assess the impact of the invasion as soon as possible.
